Welcoming spring: Martisoare handmade

Spring is almost here. So, to welcome it properly you must celebrate it properly, with a “martisor”. It’s an old Romanian tradition of celebrating spring, on 1st of March, using a charm or trinket tied with a red and white threaded string (initially, black and white), symbolizing fertility and revival of nature , but also a symbol of the coming spring.

In modern times, it lost its talisman properties (for strength, health and fertility) and became more of a symbol of friendship or love, appreciation and respect.  They are worn by women pinned to their clothes, close to the heart, until the last day of March and actually, in some parts of Romania both women and men still wear it.

More info on this old Romanian tradition on Wikipedia and the Romanian Tourist Office.
